Ground rules

This is somewhat of a competition. I give extra points for the person with the least total airfare to all of these continents. All airfares must be roundtrip from Omaha, and must for be a three-week period from now until Sept. 1. It can be two different airlines, in which case you would present two different graphic files. The timing must be such that you can make the connection. Provide at least 3 hours. If the connection has you spending the night at the airport, you must include the cost of a hotel.

Generally, the least expensive fares to these destinations are from coastal cities in the US, like LA and New York. In order to get the lowest fare, you need to find the least expensive coastal city and the least expensive flight from Omaha to that city. Sites like Kayak and Expedia won't do this automatically. There may be some ground transportation involved in transferring to a nearby airport. Include the ground transportation cost and associated graphics. Bigger cities have multiple airports so don't get confused. New York, for example, has five airports: JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, White Plains, and Newburgh. Only three offer international flights. The cheapest flights are often from the smaller airports that charge a lesser fee for landing.

You don't need to check luggage but you do need to include a carry-on bag.

Prices vary widely during this period. They also vary by day of the week. You must present screenshots of the airfare with sufficient detail to verify the dates, connections, and price - including taxes. Use only commercial airlines - you can't use military aircraft or family connections with commercial companies. The flight leaves from Omaha you can't drive to another city.

One of the websites that I used was justfly.com. Another website that I found helpful was Expedia. One website that I did not find very helpful was trip advisor.

Influence of travel dates and cities\

The best success that I found was leaving and coming back mid-week. This makes sense because it is easier to take time off of work by building in the weekends in your travel time. I felt that it was a lot easier to book flights on my own rather than using a website that books the entire trip for you.

For going to Europe I chose April 2nd to April 24th because I found that to be the cheapest time. The cheapest city in Europe to fly to was Paris. I decided to get to Paris through LaGuardia in New Jersey. LaGuardia made the most sense in terms of price for both getting to from Omaha and leaving from to get to Paris.

For traveling to Asia, I found the cheapest dates to be July 3rd to July 24th. The cheapest city to fly to in Asia was Ho Chi Minh. I decided to travel to Ho Chi Minh through LAX. There was really no efficient way to get to an airport to fly out of the US. LAX was the cheapest flight to get to Ho Chi Minh, but getting to LAX is not cheap whatsoever. It was cheaper to fly to Phoenix, but the flight from Phoenix to Asia was outrageous.

For my trip to South America, I found the cheapest dates to be April 3rd to 24th and the cheapest city by far was Medellin, Colombia. My flight path is from Omaha, to Miami, to Medellin. Flying from Miami was easily the cheapest option and Charlotte as a close second place followed that. I looked in to flying from Atlanta but that was surprisingly very expensive. Getting to Miami from Omaha was not as expensive as I originally thought. I looked in to flying from Dallas and Houston to Medellin as well, but those were also very expensive.

I chose to fly in to Casablanca in Morocco when flying to Africa. The best way to get there that I found was through Boston. I first checked on a flight through LaGuardia or JFK to Casablanca and found them to be relatively cheap. Then I realized that many of these flights were going through Boston anyway, so I chose to fly out of Boston. Getting from Omaha to Boston was not very cheap but the flight from Boston to Casablanca made it worth it. The time of year that I chose was mid-week. The dates are April 3rd to April 24th.
